Employer Obligations and Responsibilities
Training and mentoring and apprentice through to completion of their qualification requires commitment and a passion.
As an employer it is your responsibility to ensure that your apprentice receives training and supervision to the required level over the full range of unit standards and that a suitably qualified person (recognised by BCITO as the Registered Assessor) carries out assessment of their work.
The BCITO will consider an employers suitability to train and assess an apprentice based on:
- The scope of work that the enterprise undertakes.
- The range of tools and equipment that the enterprise has available.
- The enterprise's commitment to Health and Safety in the workplace.
- The experience and qualifications of those involved in the training and assessment process.
- The quality of craftsmanship and the enterprise's track record in industry training.
- The enterprise's commitment to industry training as a whole and to the training of the individual apprentice.
BCITO Support
The role of the BCITO is to monitor the apprentice's progress and the performance of the assessor to ensure assessments are "sufficient, valid, authentic, consistent and safe".
BCITO Training Advisors also support the apprenticeship process by:
- Assisting and coaching all those involved in the training process to understand what is required of them.
- Collecting results of successful assessments to register unit standards on the Apprentice's Record of Leaning with NZQA.
- Undertaking a process called "Moderation" to ensure consistency of assessments throughout the country.
- Collecting feedback on the content and relevancy of the unit standards for review purposes.
