BCITO - Building and Construction ITO

Employer Profile

Braden Cameron knows what sort of commitment is required in taking a trainee and turning them into a quality craftsperson:

“At Re Creations Building Contractors, we took on a trainee because there was a serious lack of trained people out there, and because I know that the for all the commitment you put in, the rewards are there, too."

Braden employs four apprentices and says, "There’s more support available now, and because it’s easier to sign up and train it doesn't take up a huge amount of time, we currently employ four trainees. The key thing, really, is choosing a trainee with the right attitude, a trainee who’s getting into the industry because they’re willing to learn, and because they genuinely want to be builders, not just because they want to make money."

"Another thing that employers need to keep in mind is that industry training isn't just for school leavers. A lot of guys who have been working for years are now required to complete their qualifications to stay in the industry. In recent years, I’ve trained a 45 year old, a 42 year old and a 21 year old, and they've all been great."

Obligations / contact details
Getting a trainee up to right level takes a large commitment on your part. You’ll be the one providing the training, the mentoring, motivation, and it will be up to you to guide them through to the completion of their qualification. This means ensuring that your trainee meets the right standards across the full range of unit standards and that their work is assessed by someone who is BCITO registered. We will consider an employer’s suitability to train, and assess a trainee on the following:

  • The scope of work that the enterprise undertakes.
  • The range of tools and equipment that the enterprise has available.
  • The enterprise's commitment to Health and Safety in the workplace.
  • The experience and qualifications of those involved in the training and assessment process.
  • The quality of craftsmanship and the enterprise's track record in industry training.
  • The enterprise's commitment to industry training as a whole and to the training of the individual apprentice.

BCITO Support
At the BCITO, our role is not only to monitor the progress of your trainee, but also to keep tabs on the assessment process - this way we can make sure that the training is "sufficient, valid, authentic, consistent and safe". BCITO Training Advisors also support the training process by:

  • Assisting and coaching all those involved in the training process to understand what is required of them.
  • Collecting results of successful assessments to register unit standards on the trainee’s Record of Leaning with NZQA.
  • Undertaking a moderation process to ensure consistency of assessments throughout the country.
  • Collecting feedback on the content and relevancy of the unit standards for review purposes.
