There are three main options available to people wanting to gain a carpentry qualification.

Self paced learning On the job training for both theory and practical components at a pace that works for you.
Off Job Training
Combining classroom and on-site learning through a programme of off job training, which offers additional support to the self-paced learning option.
Pre-trade Course
A one year programme completed through polytechnics or private training institutions, primarily focused on the theory, followed by further years of on-site practical learning.
You choose the option that best suits you and your lifestyle. The certificate usually takes up to four years to complete and is made up of 80 unit standards - 39 theory units and 41 practical units. There are also 3 compulsory first aid units.
