Trainee Profile

Annie Day

For Annie Day, completing the National Diploma in Construction Management with The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand helped her get the type of career she always wanted.

"When I left school I worked in a bank in Christchurch in the accounts department" says the 34-year-old. But wanting to be involved in the building industry, Annie opted to use her skills with numbers to gain a New Zealand Certificate in Quantity Surveying from the distance education provider.

From there Annie was able to get a job with a large building supply retailer working in their quotes department. "I thought I could do better, so I enrolled in the National Diploma in Construction Management" she says.

Now living in Auckland, Annie is a Contract Manager for Naylor Love, one of New Zealand's largest construction firms and long time supporter of the BCITO as one of the biggest employers."I love getting out on site and away from the desk, gaining this qualification has really helped me in my career" she explains.

Annie spends a lot of her time meeting with clients, engineers and sub contractors, making sure every thing is on-track on the building site, that paper work and invoices are up-to-date, and ensuring she gets the best prices on materials for her clients.

Now she's finished her studies, Annie is full of confidence. "The sky's the limit really, I can go anywhere around the world and build buildings, there are lots of opportunities out there."

National Diploma in Construction Management

The National Diploma in Construction Management is the BCITO's first Diploma qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework.

It is designed to provide people with the skills and knowledge required by the industry to become a successful Construction Manager.

There is only one training option available for those wishing to do Construction Management, and that is to achieve the qualification with a Provider.

Construction Management is a totally theory based qualification and although those doing it are generally working on a construction site, you don't have to be to gain the qualification.

Different Providers offer different options as to how the course is run. Some run it as classroom sessions, and others do it by correspondence, as it is difficult to pull people together off the site and away from their day to day working commitments. As such, some courses are full time while others are part time.

If you are interested in studying towards the National Diploma in Construction Management, contact your local BCITO Regional Office for more details on which Providers are offering this course.
