Describe a typical day at work?
On a good, fine day we start by putting polystyrene up on the walls, then putting on the flashings. We also work with pre-plaster mouldings, for instance, in areas around the windows. Mesh then has to go on over the polystyrene and then the work is plastered.
Best perks of the job?
I love getting to travel all around the region – I’m out and about in new environments all the time. I’ve also got a really great boss who’s generous and supportive.
Every job has its downsides – what about this one?
The weather! If it’s raining then we can’t work which can be really frustrating.
What do you enjoy about your job most of all?
The group of people I work with are really great. They support my apprenticeship and make a real effort to ensure I understand everything. I love being outside and meeting all the different people that we deal with.
Qualifications and previous experience that got you the job?
Basically my employer advertised the job opportunities with my school and the career advisor set up an interview for me. I had done some labouring work and come across cladding systems so I knew the kind of work I would be getting involved with.
What personality traits/skills/attributes help a person to get a job like yours?
You need to have good people skills because you have to deal with lots of different suppliers and customers so communication is really important.
Advice for people wanting to do an apprenticeship in PPCS?
Working is a big change from school - you learn to appreciate your weekends! Make the most of everything you can!
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Once I’ve got my qualification and a bit of experience I plan to go on my OE while I’m still young. My boss is supportive of me getting out and travelling and I know I’ve got a great trade to come back to when I come home.
