Describe a typical day at work?
As the Leading Hand on site I have to make sure that productivity is up to standard. When I come in first thing the Production Manager sets out the jobs for the day and then we get stuck in. Part of my job is to make sure that everyone is on task to get quality frame and trusses out the door on schedule.
Best perks of the job?
The new skills I’m learning through my apprenticeship! I’m becoming more confident in what I do and it’s not just in the work place, it carries through to the rest of my life as well. I really enjoy getting to work with good guys and we have a strong team environment in the plant.
Every job has its downsides – what about this one?
Sometimes a job goes wrong but I think you have to take a positive attitude, if you look for the downside that’s all you see.
What do you enjoy about your job most of all?
The sense of satisfaction at the end of the day when we see a job go out the door. It’s a good feeling to relax with the team on site after a hard days work!
Qualifications and previous experience that got you the job?
I’d done some labouring work in the past and then an opportunity for a job came up here and I jumped at it. I’ve been with my employer for a couple of years now and in my apprenticeship for the past year. I want to get qualified so I’ve got something to fall back on and also to open up my opportunities in the future.
What personality traits/skills/attributes help a person to get a job like yours?
A positive attitude towards everything you do is really important. Don’t let it get you down if you can’t do something, just stick at it – everything’s a learning curve!

Where do you see yourself in five years time?
I’ll be qualified and earning big dollars! I’m keen to travel and with my qualification I’ll
be able to work anywhere. There are heaps of job opportunities in this industry –
