Floor and Wall Tiling
The National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling (Level 4) contains fewer unit standards than some other qualifications but they carry a higher credit rating. This reflects the time that could be reasonably expected for a new entrant to the industry to take to learn the skill.
Two areas of training are required to achieve the National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling, they are:
- General skills applicable to the building and construction industry such as first aid, health and safety, low level scaffolding and use of hand and power tools.
- Industry specific skills and knowledge including trade tools, materials, preparation of surfaces, setting out tiles on site, mixing/applying adhesives and grouting, cutting and fixing tiles by different methods.
An apprenticeship in Floor and Wall Tiling is about gaining skills and developing knowledge of what is required to be a competent Floor and Wall tiler.
Floor and Wall tiling is predominately on-site work, which means the National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling is a "hands on" qualification. This means that performing day to day tasks is the method by which an apprentice becomes competent at a particular skill.
The BCITO also offer the National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling (Introductory Skills). This is a level 2 qualification designed for those that would like to explore or check out this industry and receive a qualification for their experience and learning. It is also suitable for those that wish to obtain recognised industry skills and who wish to continue in the industry but work under supervision. Those that achieve the level 2 Introductory Skills qualification may continue into the level 4 qualification.
The National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling (Level 4) is a trades-level qualification and those that achieve it can be considered fully competent, fully skilled trades people.
